Video: Ford Teases All New S550 Based Cobra Jet Ahead of SEMA

Get ready for the fastest Cobra Jet to date. Set to reveal at this year’s SEMA show.

The sixth-generation Mustang has been available from dealerships for a little over a year now. Ford began the Cobra Jet program with the S197 several years back, a new Cobra Jet has been on the minds of many enthusiasts since the S550 platform’s public debut nearly two years ago. It would be safe to assume that we’re overdue for a S550-generation Cobra Jet reveal – and you’d be right.

Alas, Ford Performance kept things in the dark this time around, until now. Before the teaser shown above, no one on the outside was aware of exactly what Ford Performance had in store for the sixth gen Mustang, or even if there would be a new Cobra Jet at all. Of course there’s always going to be speculation, but we never really know until we get word from the blue oval themselves.

Screen Shot 2015-10-27 at 4.40.14 PMGRFrom the fifteen-second clip above, there’s a lot to be speculated, and questions left unanswered. Firstly, we’re definitely aware this will be the ’15 (or ’16?) Cobra Jet. This is a fairly accurate assumption, due to the obvious “Cobra Jet” intake elbow, shown in the clip. It also appears that this model will indeed be supercharged, and is mostly likely a Ford Racing Whipple supercharger, like the previous generation Cobra Jet cars. It’s possible that this is a variation on the 2.3 TVS blower in the current Ford Racing/Roush supercharger kit. However, the snout and the intake design seem to say otherwise.

We’re probably safe to assume that the automatic transmission is the same reliable C3 unit that the Cobra Jet program has used for years. Also, check out the short burnout clip. Notice the stability and the camber or lack of camber for the rear axle. We’re going to assume Ford put a solid rear axle in the back of the car. This was likely developed by the guys at Watson racing, as they’ve been piviotal in the Cobra Jet program in the past. We can’t say for certain, but for reliability and consistency, two things that really count in the world of Cobra Jet racing, we’d say a solid rear axle, probably based on a nine-inch center section is in the back.

One thing we know for sure, is that this S550-generation Cobra Jet is going to kick some serious ass.

The all-new Cobra Jet is geared up to debut at this year’s SEMA show in Las Vegas, Nevada. You can see the car’s reveal at the Ford booth on Tuesday, and you can bet we’ll be there to capture it all.

We spy a Ford Racing Whipple supercharger on the new Cobra Jet. Could it be the 2,9 liter variation?
