Every now and then, we see racing videos that blow our minds. They span the gamut from insane displays of power and speed to spine-chilling crashes, and once in a great while, one comes along that just leaves us scratching our heads wondering what exactly we just watched.
Well we’ve found one of those head scratchers for you, and it’s a doozie.
In today’s installment of “What the heck was he thinking?!” we find a Plymouth owner from Down Under taking a trip down the drag strip. All goes well for… well… we’re not sure all was ever well on this pass. It seems possible this ride was doomed by a broken axle from the get go. As soon as the green light drops, the Barracuda strikes the tires and begins a losing battle for traction that ends with the car sitting sideways across the track facing the opposite guardrail.
Okay, that’s not so bad, right? I think many of us may have gotten a little rpm-happy on the starting line and spun uncontrollably on a pass or two, maybe even crossing into the opposing lane. If it ended there, though, we wouldn’t be talking about this video! Now that our driver has brought the ‘Cuda to a stop, he decides that he IS going to finish his pass, so he slams the transmission into reverse, backs into his lane–though not exceptionally well–and instead of taking a leisurely drive to the finish line, he decides to mat the throttle yet again.
Just like the first attempt at launching the heavy Plymouth muscle car, it once again sets the rear tires to spinning and this time finds its way directly into the guardrail. The hapless driver first tags the wall with the nose, then pirouettes around and backs the rear end into the retainer for good measure. All in all, the damage doesn’t appear to be terrible, though it seems like a safe bet that the driver’s ego is banged up pretty badly!
