When you think of drifting, chance are you’re thinking of America’s Formula Drift series of events, which have garnered the lion’s share of the attention in the drifting world. But there are literally dozens of other events put on all over the world, including the inaugural Red Bull Drift Shifters event which debuted this past week in New Zealand.
On hand was the Crazy Swede, i.e. Samuel Hubinette, who brought his Dodge Challenger drift car to the streets of Auckland for some of the tightest drifting action we’ve seen in awhile.
The drift course was set up on Auckland’s streets, making for a much smaller course than what we’re used to seeing in Formula drift. You’d think a big car like Hubinette’s Dodge Challenger might be at a disadvantage…but you’d be wrong. Somehow Hubinette manages to handle the Challenger with all the grace of a ballet dancer, getting perilously close to the walls without actually hitting them.
For his efforts, Hubinette took home 2nd place, apparently running out of fuel at the last minute and being unable to finish the competition. That’s a shame, though second place is still an impressive showing for the Crazy Swede. We have to say, Red Bull’s first drifting event looks like a crazy amount of fun…who knows, maybe it will even overtake Formula Drift one day.
