Of the many iconic names associated with vintage Mopar racing, there are few that are mentioned with more hallowed honor and respect than Mr. Ronnie Sox. The “hot shoe” pilot half of the venerable Sox & Martin Plymouth team, Ronnie was responsible for putting the ’68 Hurst HEMI Barracudas in the record books.
From the early 1960’s through the 1970’s, Sox & Martin’s immediately recognizable red, white and blue Plymouths broke records and rewrote drag racing history with each quarter mile.
Unfortunately, Ronnie’s life was cut short by prostate cancer. During which, Ronnie – who was receiving chemotherapy and radiation treatments for the disease, was more bothered by the scores of children battling cancer alongside him.
Before his passing, Ronnie and his wife Diane arranged to use his name and legacy to generate funding to aid in child cancer research at St. Jude’s.
We got the chance to talk to both Diane Sox and Ronnie’s long-time partner and friend, Buddy Martin (the second half of Sox & Martin) to talk about the foundation and the beautiful ’08 Challenger that was converted by Mr. Norm’s Garage to a look-a-like to the Sox & Martin ’71 ‘Cuda that wowed crowds so many years ago, which will be raffled off to one lucky winner tomorrow, Sunday the 10th at Mopars at The Strip.
Enjoy the video and please, look into this great cause. It’s what Ronnie would have wanted.
