Video: The First Manual C7 Z06 To Break The 11-second Barrier?

The new C7 Z06 is, without question, the most powerful car GM has ever produced. Of course, automakers provide performance numbers and figures with their vehicles, but the best part is pushing the vehicle to its limits to see if those numbers and figures can be bested. That’s exactly what the owner of this C7 Z06 did at the his local drag strip.

Those Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 ZP tires are sticky!

According to Chevrolet, an 8-speed automatic C7 Z06 can throw down a 10.95-second quarter mile and the 7-speed manual variant is said to trip the beams in 11.2 seconds. That’s not the case here, as the owner of this manual transmission, Z07-equipped Z06 managed to tear up the quarter in 10.9-seconds at 127 MPH. Now, that’s impressive. The car didn’t have street radials on, just the optional Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 ZPs, which are part of the Z07 package and are very sticky, so, yes, those could’ve been an advantage.

After the run, the owner pulls up the PDR file and watches it in the car. If you notice, the PDR recorded the car at 11.1 seconds in the quarter, which is right where Chevrolet said it would be, but the PDR is less trustworthy than the track’s timing system here. The PDR uses the ABS sensors and vehicle speed sensor to gather data, whereas the timing system at the track simply uses the beams at the start and finish line.

Because of the “rollout” (the distance it takes for the car’s front wheels to leave the staging beam at the starting line), the track’s timing system doesn’t actually start the elapsed time until the car has already moved a foot or more. The PDR presumably starts its clock the instant the Corvette begins to move, hence the slight discrepancy.

Another interesting detail is the fact that it seems like the owner didn’t even touch the launch control, based on what we are seeing on the PDR’s throttle percentage versus the engine rev counter. Instead, he found his happy medium right above 4,000 RPM and didn’t let the engine bog past 2,500 RPM. As we haven’t seen a legitimate, bone-stock, Z07-equipped, manual Z06 run the quarter faster than this, consider this the benchmark for factory Z06 times. Once customers get their hands on the automatic variants, we should see some even better times than the manual cars are putting down.
