When it comes to car collections, there are a few names that come to mind as having an admirable collection. Some names that come to mind are Bruce Meyer, Peter Mullin, Reggie Jackson, Jeff Leonard, and the list goes on.
But there’s one name that stands out, and if you haven’t caught on to what he’s been up to with his car collection, you’ve been living under a rock. Jay Leno’s Garage is the place that just about everyone has either visited or talked about, and recently they were paid a visit by Tremec Transmissions’ Enthusiast Marketing Director Nate Tovey.
It’s no secret that Leno is a bit of a performance junkie, and he’s spend some time behind the wheel of some of the world’s most powerful vehicles, and has quite a stable of his own that many of us would die for.
With his penchant for power, Leno says he’s come to rely on Tremec for many of his own vehicles because he knows he can count on Tremec to supply him with a manual transmission that is capable of getting the power up front to the rear tires.
Tremec transmissions are factory standard in many of today’s factory sports and musclecars, like the Camaro, Mustang GT350, and Hellcat Challenger. While factory transmissions such as the TR-6060 found in the Hellcat are specific to factory vehicles, it’s the aftermarket side where you’ll find the TKO five-speed and the T56 Magnum behind some of the most powerful engines under the hood of classic musclecars.
With a single overdrive for the TKO and a double overdrive for the T56, you know that you can hit the pavement hard with your high-powered classic, and hit overdrive to keep the revs down and the mileage up for longer cruising.
Leno asks one of the more significant questions that has been on the minds of many over the past few years, and that has to do with fluids. While most of us are used to gear lube for a manual transmission, Tremec recommends fluids such as Dexron ATF.
Many of us grew up on manual transmissions and would have never thought that something other than gear lube would be suitable for a manual transmission, it just shows how far we’ve come along. Tovey said, “A manual transmission basically acts like a wet clutch, you have to evacuate the fluid out of that space. A thinner fluid will translate into a crisper, faster shift activity.”
Tovey stated that while the thicker fluid might dampen the noise better, it can slow down the shifting activity. Tremec has found that today’s automatic transmission fluids are a good middle-ground when it comes to fluids.
Tovey also stated, “When these transmissions come from the factory they’re filled for life.” But he did state that performance applications where the vehicle is seeing a lot of track time and heating up the fluid, he recommends changing the fluid more regularly, but for cruisers it’s not as much an issue.
Check out the Tremec Transmissions website to see what they have for your vehicle, you might just find that a TKO is more affordable than you thought.
