Vintage Drags Are Back – Goodguys Style!

For those of you looking for a little extra in the New Year, then don’t fear. Goodguys Rod & Custom Association, the people behind some of the most amazing automotive events around, have some smoke-filled action ready to be unleashed in the coming year.

In July, Friday Night Vintage Drags are back for two pulse-pounding, adrenaline-fueled nights. To make it even better, both events are being held on historical racing grounds.

On July 12th at the National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Ohio, it will be the 16th Annual edition of the Drags, as part of the 16th PPG Nationals weekend. Come check out a wide array of vintage cars, including gassers and sportsmans. Gates open at 2pm, with final eliminations at 7pm.

For those who don’t know, the National Trail Raceway opened in 1964 and features 660 feet of concrete and asphalt. A few of the best racers in the world have competed here. Among those names are Don Garlits and Gordon Collet. It was also here that Shirley Muldowney, the first woman gas dragster driver licensed by NHRA, first won a national event, back in 1976. That monumental moment was followed in 1982 with NHRA’s first all-female professional final round.

Two weeks later on July 26th in Kent, WA, the Drags continue as part of the 26th Pacific Northwest Nationals Friday Night Drags. This weekend’s event will be held at the famed Pacific Raceways.

Much like the National Trail Raceway, Pacific Raceways is a quarter-mile long and has seen just as impressive an array of legends cross over it. Jerry “The King” Ruth, Jim Green and Herm Petersen all raced here at one point or another over the course of its 52-year history.

It’s also famed for its nine turns and half-mile, 100 foot elevation change. Maybe that’s why it’s also the training ground for law enforcement agencies. They come from all parts of the Northwest and use the track to gain experience for real-life pursuits.

Features this weekend will include funny cars and over 300 sportsman entries. With five different classes, there’ll be something for everyone. Gates open at 10 a.m., with final eliminations scheduled for 4 p.m. For both weekends, only racecars from 1972 and earlier are allowed to compete. Classes are also the same for both events and will abide by NHRA Heritage Series Rules.

Those classes are:

Hot Rod I ’54 & Earlier – 7.50-11.99

Hot Rod II ’54 & Earlier – 12.00 & Up

Street Machine I ’55-’72 – 7.50-11.99

Street Machine II ’55-’72 – 12.00 & Up

Comp (NOS & Electronics OK) – 7.50 & Up

Cash prizes are awarded for winner and runner-up in each class. Admission to both events is $50 for car and driver, $20 for general admission and $6 for kids 7-12. Two nights – hundreds of cars and moments you won’t soon forget.
