If you’ve ever wanted your very own race car, you know how difficult it can be to get your hands on one, especially one as cool as a Camaro prototype race car. But next month, that’s exactly what the Monterey, California Mecum Auction will be offering as the 2010 factory production Camaro prototype race car crosses the stage on Friday August 16th.
The 2010 Camaro prototype race car is an original SEMA concept car, built in homage to the blue and yellow 1969 Camaro Z28 that competed in the SCCA Trans Am Series for the Rodger Penske race team. This vintage icon, driven by Mark Donohue, went on to dominate the series and took home the 1969 Trans Am Championship.
When the fifth-generation Camaro was introduced, General Motors’ High Performance Vehicle Operations team and Camaro Division got together and created this prototype race car in the famed SCCA Camaro’s honor.
Just 27 of the cars were built and tested in 2008 by Milford Proving Ground technicians, after which this particular car hit the floor of the 2008 SEMA Show as a featured Chevy concept vehicle.
While this Camaro is just a prototype, it is full of Chevy performance products, from the 6.2L LS3 V8 to a Tremec 6060 6-speed transmission. The car also features many race upgrades, like a full roll cage, carbon fiber hood, trunk lid, doors and fenders, front and rear spoilers, a C&R aluminum racing radiator, and a 3-inch exhaust system with Coast Fab mufflers.
You’ll also find upgrades like Koni coilovers and struts, Brembo 4-wheel disc brakes, an adjustable sway bar, external coolers and a reinforced chassis on the Camaro. It’s all topped off with Hoosier spec tires, perfect for the track.
Inside the cockpit, it’s all downright serious racing.
Included in the sale of the car is a digital photo album detailing the step-by-step build of this amazing car.
Sold on bill of sale, this unique concept car is sure to add spice to any Chevy collection.
