Shift Points And Carb Swaps

We recently swapped from an Edelbrock carburetor to a throttle body fuel injection and noticed our transmission just didn’t feel the way it did with the carb. The reason was simple as the throttle body uses a Holley style throttle linkage. Not a huge difference, but enough to alter the finicky shift points and feel of our 200-R4 transmission.

How can something so simple and little make such a huge difference in the way your transmission and car perform? On a 200-R4 trans, it is imperative that the linkage you use is designed specifically for the carb and trans combination. This bracket corrects the geometry required when using Holley based carburetor linkage with a 200-R4 transmission.

This is a very important as improper adjustments will also affect the overall performance and longevity of your transmission. On both the 200-R4 and the 700-R4, everything the trans needs to know is transmitted through the TV cable to the main hydraulic circuit. An improperly set TV cable will result in late and harsh shifts or weak and early shifts as well as affect the downshift points and feel. In short, it is one of the most important settings on your vehicle.

We found that TCI Automotive offers several kits that will help you set up your transmission accurately with your carb or throttle body. TCI offers complete kits as well as just the Corrector Brackets. The kits are supplied with everything including a TV cable, linkage bracket and a sturdy mount for the cable. For an Edelbrock carb, #370813 and for Holley based applications, #370814.

For our application, we were able to use our existing TV cable and mount so we only needed to use the TV Cable Corrector, #376715. The little

bracket came with a mounting bolt and was simple to install and set. Now our trans shiftslike new and we’re back on the road with a simple fix.
