GM’s LS9 engine is the most potent powerplant to ever come out of the Detroit automaker. With 638 horsepower on tap, this monster engine is only found in a single car on the dealership lot, the Corvette ZR-1. Yet GM sells the LS9 as a crate engine, which means this monster motor has found its way into a number of other cars, including the awesome 5th gen Camaro.

A few weeks ago we told you how Lingenfelter’s LS9-powered Camaro ran a 9.596 @ 152 mph. Well that just wasn’t good enough, because Lingenfelter has taken that same Camaro back out, where it was caught going 9.043 @ 159 mph. So how far off are 8’s?

In stock form, the 2010-11 Camaro can very nearly run in the high-12’s thanks to its 426 horsepower LS3 engine. Impressive, but nothing compared to the mighty motor that is the LS9 engine. Then Lingenfelter got their hands on the engine, adding a bigger supercharger and intercooler, as well as a twin-fuel pump system and Lingenfelter’s own custom camshaft. The transmission has also been replaced by a beefed up aftermarket unit.

So far as we know, no other modifications were made to this Camaro between the first run and this most previous run. While a half-second may not seem like much, this latest run was just 4/100 of a second away from the 8-second barrier. For an otherwise full-weight muscle car, that’s nothing short of amazing, and with a 159 mph trap speed, 8’s are certainly within the grasp of this bad boy. It’s only a matter of time (and driver skill) now.
