For the last several years it seems like the manual transmission was becoming a thing of the past. Entire generations have learned to drive with only a few among its ranks knowing how to shift. For the last few decades automatics have outsold manuals even on performance cars.
However, it seems Mopar fans still enjoy the testosterone inducing, gut wrenching sensation of winding through a gear box while roosting a brand new set of tires. Evidence can been seen in the recent release of the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat where the manual is outselling the automatic.
Why is this you may ask? Our theory lies in the fact that the Challenger Hellcat isn’t designed to be a practical car, it’s designed to be a race car for the road. It’s a car designed for fun, and what could be more fun than ripping through the gears of a six speed transmission tied to 707 Detroit iron horses.
Chances are owners of Hellcats aren’t looking to go on sweet Sunday drives around the neighborhood. No, they are looking forward to popping the clutch at stop lights, doing wild burnouts to impress their friends, outrunning anything that pulls up beside them, and pull low 11-second second gear jamming quarter miles that will suck them into their seats.
Despite the 8-speed automatic offering 22 miles per gallon and still being able to pull off 11.2 second quarter miles (10.8 with drag radials), buyers are opting for stick shifts at a ratio of 55/45. Note however, that the Hellcat has only been on the market for a short time and only diehard Mopar enthusiasts are currently buying. As we roll into 2015, automatic sales may start to pass manual. However, for now you lucky buyers that purchased one of these wild cats enjoy the rush!
