In 1984, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis starred in what is arguably one of the greatest movies of the entire 80s, Ghostbusters. Playing the parts of three misfit parapsychologists obsessed with the paranormal, the movie has endured for more than three decades as a comedic classic that also lifted a once-obscure bit player into national stardom.
No, we don’t mean Sigourney Weaver, but rather the 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor ambulance the Ghostbusters christened the “Ecto-1” and serving to inspire a car cult dedicated to its now-iconic design. With a third installment of the Ghostbusters franchise finally being made though, the moviemakers had a choice; go with a proven classic, or appoint another obscure vehicle to service as the new Ecto-1. Director Paul Feig tweeted pictures of the new Ecto-1 to fans earlier this week, taking the second option by putting the ladies of Ghostbusters 3 behind the wheel of a 1989 Cadillac Brougham station wagon.
For a sequel to a classic 80s film, we could think of no better choice, as the Ghostbusters started out as scrappy, broke paranormal investigators. The ‘59 Cadillac wasn’t a prized classic like it is today, it was just a crappy car bought for cheap and driven hard, though today even a rust bucket needing a fair amount of work can cost big bucks.
But go on your local craigslist and you’ll see that a Cadillac Brougham like the one being used for Ghostbusters 3 tend to be cheap, plentiful, and pretty well kept. In other words, the perfect workhorse for a group of scrappy paranormal investigators. The Ecto-1 won’t be alone this time either, with Instagram user nerdtastic girl posting an image of a dirtbike wearing the a yellow New York plate reading “Ecto-2”.
Will it ever be as cool as the original Ecto-1? Probably not, but who would have ever believed an obscure Cadillac ambulance would one day be regarded as one of the greatest movie vehicles of all time?
