When it came to the 2015 Ford F-150, the Blue Oval pulled out all the stops in the pursuit of extra performance and improved fuel efficiency. Whether it be shedding up to 700 pounds by going to an all-aluminum body, or the addition of the new 2.7 liter EcoBoost V6 engine, the new Ford F-150 offers better performance all the way around for pickup buyers. Even so, there’s always room for improvement, and in this case that means borrowing a button or two from stablemate, the Ford Mustang.
Engineers have introduced the 2015 Mustang’s “Sport Mode” to the Ford F-150, offering pickup buyers a more engaging and dynamic driving experience when they punch the accelerator pedal. Activated by pushing the tow/haul button twice, F-150 drivers can now get a little extra oomph out of their engine of choice.
“Our team realized how well the new F-150 handled and responded to acceleration due to its reduced weight,” said Karl Jungbluth, Ford transmission calibration engineer. “So we decided we could adapt the sport mode capabilities of the six-speed automatic transmission from Mustang to F-150 to enhance the overall driving experience for truck customers.”
By changing the frequency of gearshifts, Ford engineers can keep the F-150’s motor in the powerband sweet spot for an extended period of time. This can significantly improve acceleration (at the expense of fuel economy), while giving drivers a more entertaining driving experience, especially on twisty, turning roads. While it might seem a bit crazy to be tossing a full-size pickup into hairpin turns, the 2015 F-150 is a much lighter and better-handling beast than any of its predecessors. Ford isn’t quick to quote any actual performance numbers, but you’ll certainly almost certainly notice the difference in a seat-of-the-pants test.
With better throttle response and acceleration, Sport Mode gives F-150 owners a taste of what the Mustang has to offer, but without sacrificing any utility.
