Star Wars and merchandising have always gone hand-in-hand, and with the seventh movie in the series ready to premiere, you can seemingly find Star Wars in every aisle of every store in the country. Even Hot Wheels has gotten in on the action, working with Disney to build a running, driving hot rod based on Darth Vader’s iconic helmet, and Jay Leno got to take the Dark Side for a spin on the latest episode of Jay Leno’s Garage.
This custom hot rod was built to celebrate Hot Wheels new collaboration with Disney, though it’s not the first time the toy maker has teamed up to make a movie-based vehicle. Hot Wheels Designer Bryan Benedict and builder Billy Hammon were on hand for this episode to discuss how a project like this goes from sketch to scale model to running, driving hot rod.
The ground-hugging all-black hot rod t is more than just a recreation of Vader’s helmet, as it is loaded with props and easter eggs, including the Sith lord’s original lightsaber hilt, as well as the classic sound of Vader breathing. Benedict also explains how he came up with the concept, drawing on the backstory of Vader to try and best represent him in vehicular form. We don’t think Anakin Skywalker would be displeased.
Under all the black cladding is a Chevy Corvette C6 chassis and engine, though everything from the frame on-up is pretty much a custom job. Amazingly, this is a fully functional vehicle, front to back, even though it doesn’t even look like you can get into it. We won’t spoil the surprise for you, but we will tell you to skip to around the 11-minute mark for a moment that should remind die-hard fans of a certain scene from The Empire Strikes Back.
We’ll just leave it at that.
