At first glance, you may not even recognize this car as a 1957 Chevrolet wagon. It has the side trim from a ’55 Pontiac, the grill from a ‘57 Buick, and custom driving lights in the front bumper. This custom creation belongs to Joe Ball of British Columbia, Canada, and is one of only about 70 cars like this that were ever produced. Why so unusual? It is a delivery sedan with windows all the way around.
“These were usually ordered by the military, armed forces, and forestry service,” Joe explained. “That is because they liked the wagon, but wanted the tailgate that opens up and completely out of the way.” It’s a cool concept. Looking at it you almost think it could be some kind of Nomad made out of a four door, when in fact it is just a rare original option.
Joe used to drag race a ’57 Chevy decades ago before the local strip closed in 1973. He still has that ’57 and found out after buying this one that there was a connection between his two cars. In some old pictures from the strip he noticed a 1957 delivery sedan that looked just like this one, but with about 70 of them made, how does he know it is the same car? Well, the back window on the car he raced has the exact same crack. “I have left the window the way it was when I got it,” Joe told us. “It’s a reminder of the old days.”
A little bit different now than when he raced it back in the old days, it features a 350 cubic-inch small block Chevy engine, automatic transmission, and rear end out of a Nova. The engine actually came out of a 1970 Blazer that belongs to Joe’s wife. She warned us to be careful what we leave parked on their property, because we may just come back to it without an engine. Yikes. Have you ever been able to track down a car you saw in the past?
