You’ll probably never see a car like this again. Ever. We’ve sure never seen anything like it before. There are plenty of cars out there that use the front fenders from this and the rear bumper off that to get a custom look—don’t get us wrong, a lot of those look pretty nice. However, when it comes to custom hybridization, this has to take it all.
This 1962 Impala has had the roof from a 1961 Buick hardtop grafted onto it. You can’t tell if you don’t know what you’re looking at either. It’s just that well done. The owner and craftsman that did all of this work is Mike Wilson of Port Orchard, Washington. “This was a regular hardtop,” Mike explained. “But I put the Buick roof on to give it a real bubble-top look.” Mike did all of the fabrication, all of the paint, and is the source of all of the creativity that went into the design.
Not only does this car look good on the outside, it’s built well on the inside. It features a 348 cubic-inch Chevrolet engine, Edelbrock aluminum heads, dual Edelbrock 500 cfm carburetors, custom headers, an aluminum radiator, a Ford 9-inch rearend with 4.57:1 positraction gearing, and a Tremec T-56 6-speed transmission. The suspension has also been upgraded with a hand fabricated frame, C-6 Corvette control arms, 4-link rear suspension, front and rear sway bars, and air ride on all four corners.
Along with the custom top, it features a custom built and fully functional hood scoop. It follows the lines on the hood and if it weren’t for the black highlight, you might even miss it. The floors have also been custom built, along with the transmission tunnel and custom console. The red interior also look really good in contrast with the silver paint and black top.
A hard to imagine amount of work went into this car, and the only thing Mike outsourced was the seat covers. It is the perfect combination of modest and showy, with more than enough classic style to go around.
This is the kind of car that is cool because someone that isn’t closely familiar with vintage muscle might not even recognize the extra effort that went into the customization of this car. Anyone can appreciate it, but an exclusive group with really know what’s been done to it.
