This Factory Five Mk4 kit car is built to perform and is capable of 400 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque. Those numbers alone aren’t what make this build impressive, but instead it’s the way the power is made that stands out to us. It doesn’t have a blower, a turbo, nitrous, or a surprisingly large big-block under the hood. Instead, this car features something entirely different — an electric motor.
Manzanita Micro of Kingston, Washington, is an electronics company that builds high performance electric vehicles and equipment. Rich Rudman is the owner of the company and he grew up in Kitsap county. “Kingston is small and under the radar,” He told us. “But if you look closely, there is a lot going on here.”
Rich works with John Thomas at Manzanita Micro and together they built this car for a client. It’s powered by an 11-inch warp motor and controlled by one of Manzanita’s own devices: a Manzanita Micro Zilla2k controller. The engine is powered by 2,000 amps of electricity at 200 volts and the drivetrain makes use of a standard T-5 manual transmission. “It doesn’t have the top end you’d expect, but it has serious bottom end numbers.” Rudman explained. “If you want more you can pay more. It doesn’t matter if you are talking pistons, turbines, or electric—it all comes down to dollars.”
The client test drove the car and was not as impressed with the performance. He told Rich that he wanted more. Knowing the car was just tuned down, Rich turned things up and had him take it out again. Rich told us,“It went from being just an electric car to oh shit we’re going to break something if we are not careful.”
The biggest hurdle in building something like this is battery location. It isn’t as easy as just finding a place for 5-10 gallons of fuel to sit. The batteries are bigger and bulkier than a fuel tank. As far as performance capabilities go, Rich is confident he could make a seven second dragster. “This car was brought in to be upgraded and made operational,” Rich told us. “And we did so with attitude.” What do you think? Can you accept an all-electric version of one of the most popular kit cars in the world? Or do you need to hear and feel the rumble to buy into a car like this?
