Mopars have always been for those who sought to run with a different crowd. After all, sales statistics have proven time and again that Americans prefer to buy from Chrysler’s crosstown competitors, Ford and GM, more than they opt for a Mopar. But sometimes being an underdog has its advantages, allowing companies like Dodge to tap a specific group of buyers who want to drive something different.
Back in 1966, they called it the “Dodge Rebellion,” and as this vintage commercial for the Dodge Charger demonstrates, Mopar really was the brand for the rebel without a cause.
What we found of particular interest in this commercial was that, rather than focus on the Charger itself, the advertisement starts off with a pretty girl in a speedboat. Turns out the Chrysler used to make boats too!
This particular “runabout” was fitted with a 75-horsepower Chrysler outboard, part of the Dodge Rebellion’s navy. In fact, it takes nearly 20 seconds for the “leader” of the Dodge Rebellion, the ’66 Charger, to even show up.
“It’s here!” the announcer says, before listing off a long list of standard features like the four bucket seats, tachometer, and headway headlights. Yes, we can see why so many would have been drawn to the Dodge Rebellion. Wouldn’t mind getting ourselves one of those boats or pretty girls, either…
