Don Likes of Shelton, Washington, has had this truck for around 10 years, and it took 9 of those to build it how you see today. “I’ve put 2,000 miles on this truck,” Don explained. “I didn’t build it to just sit. It might get a ding or two, but I still drive it.”
This is the vision of something that Don has been wanting since the ’60s. “I finally found one that wasn’t too bad,” he told us. “It had a good cab and good fenders.” Not too bad however, does not mean perfect. When Don bought it, there was no frame, no engine, no transmission, and it was in pieces.
He found an original frame to use and got a nice Ford Flathead engine, 5-speed transmission, and used the rearend out of a 1990 Ford Ranger pickup. The engine is a 266 cubic-incher with Edelbrock heads, an Edelbrock intake manifold, and a Holley 600cfm carburetor. He also went with a newer, MSD ignition system for reliability.
Lund Machine also made his custom air cleaner lid.
The interior features a set of Stewart-Werner instruments in a custom built bezel that Don had made locally in Shelton by Lund’s Machine. “I wanted something I could drive on the highway without worrying about it,” Don told us. “It’s a pretty simple old classic.”
We dig this classic-built hotrod truck and want to see more like it, so if you have a classic hotrod or roadster, send in an email with some pictures. Maybe it’ll be our next Street Feature. There’s only one way to find out.
