We all like to think our cars are unique. Depending on what you do to it, your Mustang or Camaro or Challenger certainly may fit the description of different. Yet at the end of the day, no matter what car you drive, there are hundreds of thousands or maybe even millions of cars out there just like it. For some people, being different just isn’t different enough.
Back in 1952, Jay Everett was tired of seeing all the bloated lead sleds driving around, so he embarked upon building his own masterpiece, the Astra Coupe. Now, this one-of-a-kind car has popped up over at Hemmings from seller Fantasy Junction with an asking price of $125,000.
No other car on the planet resembles the Astra Coupe, and for good reason. Jay Everett built this masterpiece from the ground up, fabricating an entire aluminum frame and chassis. Many famous names helped bring this project to life, including Paul Koonz (who did the chassis) and Jack Sutton (who helped shape the aluminum body). The windshield came from a ’52 Cadillac, while the back glass was sourced from a Chevrolet Fleetline.
The Astra helped inspire generations that were to come after it. For instance, the front bodywork was hinged to flip forward, like a clamshell. A short-throw column shifter beat George Hurst’s design to the punch by a few years as well. Under the hood was an Oldsmobile 303 “Rocket” engine with the exhaust pipes exiting by the rockers. The Astra has been fully restored, and we hope this one of a kind car finds a proper home.
