We make a big deal whenever a true “survivor” car shows up. What exactly is a “survivor” car? It’s an unrestored original, a car that has never really been modified, wrecked, rusted, or ruined. These cars have their original paint, unmolested engines, and have usually spent most of their useful life forgotten in some storage.
But not the Outback GT. The tale of this Australian-born Ford Falcon GT as posted over on the blog “Old Red” is almost unbelievable. In 40 years, this Falcon has never been washed, cleaned, or even had the engine apart for a fix. Now that’s a survivor.
The Australian Ford Falcon is a legendary muscle car from the Land Down Under, not unlike the Ford Mustang here in the states. Many a car show features Falcons in droves…but not like this.
As the story goes, this four-door Falcon GT was purchased in December of 1970 by an outback rancher who fitted it with a larger fuel tank, a manual transmission and radio, air conditioning and sports wheels. The rancher used the Falcon up until the late 1980’s, when he bought a new car and stored the Falcon in the shed.
Then a buyer came around and scooped it up. But rather than restore it, he kept it exactly as he found it, doing the minimal amount of work necessary to get it on the road. Some things, like the broken seat and leaf front coil had to be replaced. He intends to keep it that way, driving it every day and showing off, which is exactly what these cars were meant for. It’s a fascinating story and we really recommend reading the blog from top to bottom. You’ll thank us.
