The Pro Street movement really made an impact on the gearhead community. Pro Street builds inspired countless car lovers to backhalf their rides for big tires, and stuff a blown engine in between the front fenders. Nick Ours was influenced by the Pro Street style, and that’s what led him to build this awesome 1970 Dodge Charger 500.
Nick’s father had a 1937 Ford truck that he was always working on and it fascinated him. The truck had a gnarly engine package and Nick was more than happy to help his dad with the old Ford. It was that process of taking a vehicle and changing it into something better that kept Nick interested in cars.
The circle of friends Nick ran with all had Mopars, but he was the lone Chevy guy of the group. It turns out that all of the exposure to Mopars had an impact on Nick. When the opportunity arose, he pounced on picking up this Charger.
“I always wanted to build a Pro Street car and found this one on eBay. It was being sold as a roller out of New Mexico and the price was right. It was an old race car, so it needed a new interior and a lot of other odds and ends. We got the car home, stripped it down for a paint job, and found a lot of panels that needed to be replaced. After we got all that done, it was time to work on getting the car put back together and on the road again,” Nick says.
When the paint was done drying, Nick stuffed a 440 cubic-inch Mopar mill under the hood of the Charger that was built by Gellner Engineering. This saucy engine cranks out over 600 horsepower on pump gas and is backed by a 727 TorqueFlight transmission. Out back, you’ll find a ladder bar suspension with coilover shocks and narrowed 8 ¾ rearend.
Nick and a friend worked on the interior to make it a little less race car and more street-friendly. They added a set of bucket seats and door panels to the interior. Finally, the rear tubs and other parts of the interior got a fresh coat of paint.
It’s really hard to find a single fault with Nick’s Charger build, the car is immaculate. Pro Street cars will always be cool and this Charger carries that flag even further. Do yourself a favor, if you see this Charger at a car show take the time to enjoy all the work Nick put into the build.
