These days, many major automakers are forgoing traditional television and print advertisements in favor of social media. Once upon a time though, the use of television advertisements to sell cars was a revolutionary way of getting the word out, and many a successful sale can be traced back to these vintage car ads.
We’ve seen a number of sometimes funny, sometimes weird, and often sexist muscle car advertisements before, but this ad for a 1965 Mustang manages to combine all three of these into one 60-second spot.
The commercial starts with your standard company man named Harvey checking out the all-new ‘65 Mustang as a narrator talks about the “unbelievable” happening. Opening the door, Harvey finds…a dancing hula girl? Yup, that’s a dancing hula girl alright. Then Harvey sits down and bam! He’s on the race track jockeying for position.
And that’s just 30-seconds into the commercial. Before its over, Harvey will visit the old west, the California coast, and hula girl once again before the ad is over. It’s definitely a different take on selling a muscle car…but it must have been effective, as Ford sold hundreds of thousands of these cars in short order. We wonder what ever happened to ol’ Harvey? Probably drove his Mustang into the sunset with hula girl…
