There has been a lot of nostalgia floating around the Chrysler offices these days. There was of course the decisions to bring back the Charger and Challenger names for the 21st century, and more lately the return of the Dodge Dart as a front-drive compact car. But the Pentastar isn’t done digging out old names for new products.
AllPar reports that the latest name to make a return from Chrysler’s past is TorqueFlite, which will be utilized on the new 8-speed automatic transmission backing V8 engines.
First debuting in 1956, at the time the 3-speed TorqueFlite was a state-of-the-art transmission, and initially was controlled by buttons on the dashboard, rather than a shifter. Eventually though a shifter was integrated, at the time the TorqueFlite was considered the pinnacle of automatic transmission technology, providing smooth, quiet shifts with what would become legendary reliability.
Chrysler dropped the TorqueFlite name in the 1990’s, for it will be making a comeback for the ZF-series 8-speed automatic, which is already in use in the Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 backing a V6 engine. Plans are to use this transmission to back big V8’s as well, in everything from sedans and coupes to pickup trucks. But can the new TorqueFlite live up to the legend of the original?
