Pro-Touring cars are the latest evolution in classic car recreations, taking vintage body styles and modernizing them with suspension and engine technologies from the 21st century. Pro-Touring cars can be done on the cheap, though it is often those big-dollar builds with flashy looks that show up on our radar.
Cars like this 1967 Ford Mustang coupe, Pro-Touring style, up for sale on eBay. With a classic big-block drivetrain and modern suspension bits, this is one of the cooler “hybrids” out there.
While many Pro-Touring builds opt for modern fuel-injected engines, this particular build has a 427 cubic-inch side oiler big-block V8. One of the more famous iterations of the 427 engine, the side oiler, is a later version that fed oil to the crankshaft first (versus top-oiler setups that fed oil down through the valves and cam first). Backing the big-block is a 4-speed Toploader transmission, another classic part from Ford’s catalog.
However, while the drivetrain is vintage, the suspension is anything but. Wilwood power brakes front and back provide stopping power. A rack-and-pinion system updates the old steering system, and a custom suspension brings handling capabilities in line with today’s cars. And then of course there is the two-tone paint job, sweeping hood and custom grille, and an interior much more posh than what it left the factory with.
The asking price? Just under $140,000. Nothing to sneeze at, but to replicate such a build would cost as much, if not more. Seems like a square deal, if you’ve got the cash.
