What is the most trying, hardcore, and intense form of motorsports? That is a question for the ages, one with no right or wrong answer. Top Fuel drag racing requires the motors to be rebuilt after every run. The 24 Hours of Le Mans is notoriously brutal on vehicles and drivers alike. And no motorsport has claimed as many lives as European rally racing.
But if you’re looking for a truly balls-to-the-wall driving experience where the only thing that matters is your top speed, then you want to enter a contest like the Nevada Silver State Classic. This event pits racers of all kinds against each other in an attempt to maintain the highest average speed over the course of 90 miles of State Route 318, and this year a new record has been set in a highly modified former NASCAR Dodge Charger.
Carbuzz reports that Jim Peruto clocked in an astounding average speed of 217 MPH during last week’s Silver State Classic. Not only did he win the event, but he smashed a record that had stood since 2000 for world’s fastest open road racer. Peruto’s modified Charger is a former NASCAR competitor, and during his run Peruto managed to hit a top speed of 244 MPH.
His average speed over 90 miles was 217.56 MPH, about 10 MPH faster than the former record held by Chuck Shafer. This gives Peruto a bit of breathing room, and other competitors will be hard pressed to beat a car meant for max speed like a NASCAR-designed Charger. What vehicle would you choose to try and beat Peruto’s top speed record? And don’t say a Buggatti Veyron…
