When it comes to car auctions, the focus is often on just that; the cars. Yet here in America it is trucks, not cars, that are the best-selling vehicles. Where would racing teams be without big trucks to ferry their vehicles from one contest to another? As it so turns out though, trucks are about to get their due in a very big way.

RM Auctions will host what could be the most storied car hauler of all history, a 1956 Fiat bus chassis with a custom car-hauler body originally purchased by Maserati. But there is one name attached to this car hauler; Carroll Shelby. Hemmings Auto Blog reports that this Titan among trucks will go up for grabs at RM Auctions Monterey Event Aug. 17-18, with price estimates ranging from $850,000 to $1.1 million.

You read that right; this could be a million dollar truck, and at that price it is worth every penny. As we already noted, this custom car carrier was built by Maserati to carry three racers, plus an entire workshop and enough tools to outfit an entire team. After Maserati got out of racing in 1957, they sold it to Lance Reventlow, who briefly produced and raced the Scarab sports car.

Reventlow later sold it to Shelby, who used the car carrier to campaign his Daytona racers all over Europe. Shelby reportedly added the third axle as well, and after Shelby was done it went on to carry Lotus, Ferrari, and Porsches among others. At some point, the flat-twelve diesel engine was replaced by a Leyland 11.5 liter, six-cylinder turbo diesel, the engine it currently uses.

It wasn’t until 2006 that this carrier of legendary cars was restored, and if previous auction estimates are any indicator (and they are), this hauler could bring seven figures. With Shelby’s recent passing, anything with his name attached is instantly more valuable, and car haulers are a hot ticket these days. A ‘59 Fiat carrier built for Ferrari recently fetched $990,000.

Looks like trucks are finally getting their dues.
