The Daytona Speedway has historically been a place where American automakers trot out their latest-and-greatest cars for the assembled crowds to drool over. It is one of America’s premiere motorsports events, and the Daytona International Speedway has seen some spectacular, brand new cars grace its oval track as official pace cars for the annual racing event known as the Daytona 500.
Back in 1969, the official pace car was a ‘69 Chevy Camaro SS/RS, and just one such car was ever used. Over at the Hemmings Classifieds, this one-of-one, restored and documented Camaro is up for sale for the low, low price of $169,000. This Camaro is a dream for collectors the world over. In addition to being a meticulously-restored 1969 Chevy Camaro that has graced the pages of many a magazine, this is a one-of-a-kind Daytona 500 pace. This isn’t some small, unimportant race here; we’re talking about the Daytona 500.
Under the hood of this SS/RS is a 396 cubic-inch big-block rated at 350 horsepower, backed by Turbo 400 transmission. Out back are 2:73 gears and a Posi-traction rearend, and this Camaro pace car comes fully loaded with Rally Sport wheels, air conditioning, power brakes, power steering and other premium features.
But it is the documented history as a Daytona 500 pace car that sets this Camaro apart. The price is steep, but collectors will no doubt find it worth every penny.
