Back in “the day”, most drag racers thought nothing of selling or scrapping their old race cars to the highest bidder. Few people wanted a beat-on race car, and those that did often raced these cars into the ground. That means that nowadays, surviving race cars can bring top dollar at auction, and a whole cottage industry has sprouted up restoring classic race cars to their original specs.
Today’s eBay find required no restoration though, as it is an almost entirely original survivor, and a three-time national record setter. This 1970 Dodge Challenger T/A drag car has just 3,000 miles on it, wears its original paint, and looks just how it did when it raced more than 40 years ago.
While this Challenger managed to take home three national records in just a year’s worth of racing, the career of this Challenger didn’t last long. After a falling out between the Challenger’s owner and builder, this Challenger sat untouched from 1972 until 2002, when the original owner finally sold it.
While the body has never been touched, the drivetrain was freshened so that the next owner can take it out for a drive if so inclined. Not that we would recommend taking a former drag racing muscle car on a weekend jaunt. But for the almost $105,000 asking price, the new owner could do pretty much whatever they want as far as we’re concerned. With such a short racing career, maybe it’s about time this Challenger went out and stretched its legs.
For that kind of money, would you keep this survivor in the garage, or would you take it to the drag strip and see what happens?
