Visit Detroit, Michigan today and you’ll be hard-pressed to ignore the signs of urban decay all about the manufacturing hub. Yet once upon a time this city was considered the capital of the Midwest, and there are those working to restore Detroit to its former glory. But it will take a lot of time, money, and effort to bring Detroit back from the brink.
With local, state, and even the Federal government tapped for funding though, Detroit’s prospects are few. But thanks to a partnership with local business leaders, Detroit will be getting 23 new emergency vehicles and 100 new cop cars, reports Click on Detroit.
The donors come from a wide variety of bankgrounds and industries, including Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Quicken Loans, Platinum Equity, the Penske Group, and of course the Big Three Automakers, Ford, GM, and Chrysler. Together these donors have donated more than $8 million worth of police cars and emergency vehicles to the cash-strapped city.
Detroit’s public services have been especially hard hit, and certain areas of Detroit are no longer regularly patrolled and have no access to emergency services. While these new vehicles won’t help with the labor shortfall, it will give those police and EMS workers newer, more reliable rides while on the job. It will also give Detroit one of the most varied police forces, at least in terms of what their cops drive. Now criminals will have to look over their shoulder for every Taurus, Caprice, and Charger on the road.
