The American muscle car phenomenon of cheap, powerful vehicles designed solely for speed and torque is unlikely to ever be repeated. At its peak, muscle cars even influenced the British car culture, which was more used to small and nimble roadsters than big, brutish American fastbacks. The Jensen Interceptor, a big (for the British) rear-wheel drive coupe was even powered by a Chrysler 383 V8.
Even in its home country, finding a Jensen Interceptor for restoration is no easy task, with just over 6,400 ever built. But finding one in the U.S., like this incredible Connecticut Craigslist find? That is a rare find indeed, and not for the inexperienced or easily discouraged.
A rare but desirable British muscle car, the Jensen Interceptor name was revived in 1966 for a Grand Touring car powered by a Chrysler 383 Magnum engine. In 1971 two 440 engines were offered, albeit briefly, and Jensen Interceptor production ended in 1975 with just 6,408 built. Most of those are still at home in merry ol’ England, but a handful made their way out of the country to America.
This 1971 model packs the Chrysler 383 engine and looks to be mostly complete, though it needs a full restoration. With most Jensen restoration companies based in the U.K., shipping parts from England will make already-pricey parts even more costly, though there are a few dedicated Jensen restorers in the U.S.
This British impersonation of an American muscle machine will certainly turn heads, as will you from the right-hand side of the car. Depending on where you live you may need to get special exemption for a right-hand drive vehicle, but this Jensen Interceptor, fully-restored, would be well worth the effort. Or, you could do what this guy did with his Jensen Interceptor and have something truly different.
