The Chevy Impala is a quintessential American muscle car, a true American icon. Every car collector worth their salt has at least one Impala in their collection, and one of the most desirable Impalas of all is the 1965 Impala SS coupe. Not only were these classic strip cruisers, but many were turned into serious drag cars over the years as well.
Up on eBay right now is a modified 1965 Chevy Impala SS drag car with a 396 big-block V8 under the hood, and this all-original survivor has been lightened to make it a wicked-fast drag car.
Now when we say all original, we mean it hasn’t really been restored, though it has been heavily modified as it was a Super Stock racer for years. The seller claims it is an original SS, but was probably an original small-block car rather than a big-block. The current owner has had the car for a decade, and bought it after it had been lightened up for drag strip duty.
“Lightened” is of course relative as well, as the Impala still weighs in at a healthy 3,300 pounds. Even so, this Impala can rip-off mid 10’s in the quarter-mile thanks to the Turbo 400 automatic transmission and 4:56 gears in the rear end. This is one Impala that isn’t destined for the car collection crowd. Nope, this car belongs on the drag strip, and hopefully her next owner realizes that as well.
