Even if you’re a die-hard, no-compromises muscle car kinda guy, you’ve got to admit that the Tesla Model S is a pretty cool car. Sure, it lacks that powerful V8 growl we all love, but the rear-wheel drive electric car can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in as little as 4.2 seconds, just a half-second behind the 662 horsepower Shelby GT500.

Add all-wheel drive into the mix, and the Tesla Model S is suddenly nipping at the heels of the Shelby. A new report from The Verge says that an all-wheel drive Model S is in the making for 2014, improving acceleration and cold weather performance.

Tesla designed the Model S with advancements and improvements, like battery-swapping, in mind. Elon Musk’s electric car maker has already announced that its next vehicle, the Model X SUV, will be available with all-wheel drive and shares 60% of its components with the Model S sedan. So making an all-wheel drive Model S should be a piece of cake.

In order to preserve efficient, Tesla might make the all-wheel drive system option, which would still allow for some strangely silent burnouts as well. All-wheel drive would make Tesla buyers in cold climates feel better about their purchase, and performance enthusiasts could see improvements to acceleration. An electric car that can go from 0 to 60 mph in under 4 seconds? And let’s not forget that the quarter mile time is faster than a Dodge Viper at 12.37 seconds. How can you not love that?
