After a long absence, the Holden Monaro will finally be making its return to America as the Chevy SS. After underpinning two different Pontiacs before the brand was scuttled, America’s lust for a big, rear-wheel drive sedan has not been sated in anyway, even if sales in Holden’s home market are less-than-great.
Perhaps Holden could improve sales in Australia by taking an old trick out of GM’s book; detract two doors from a sedan and make it into a coupe. The Sydney Morning Herald revealed that two of Holden’s lead designers secretly came up with a two-door take on the Holden Monaro, a car that has no hope of ever seeing the light of day.
Why no hope for a Holden Monaro coupe? GM isn’t looking to steal any thunder from the two two-door sports cars already in its lineup, the recently-refreshed 2014 Camaro and the all-new 2014 Corvette Stingray. Even in Holden’s home market, buyers are moving away from large, rear-wheel drive sedans and towards more fuel-efficient compact cars. The market is too crowded for another car like the Monaro coupe.
But that didn’t stop Holden designers Peter Hughes and Simon Gow from undertaking a top-secret project to chop two doors from the sedan design. The project was done during off-hours, and GM has zero, nata, no plans to put such a vehicle into production. But maybe some Monaro fans out there have seen this picture, and are already trying to figure out how to make this gorgeous concept a real car. It couldn’t be that hard, right?
