Mopar fans, we love you, but you’re easily the most insane sect of American car enthusiasts. Chrysler built the brightest, boldest, and fastest cars of the era, as well as some of the rarest, and thanks to a ravenous collector car crowd, the right car with the right options and matching numbers can bring in tremendous money compared to cars that, in their day, were seen as contemporaries and rivals.
There were just 468 HEMI 426-powered Dodge Chargers built in the 1966 model year, and a well-optioned, numbers-matching model can command six-figures at the right auction. But you don’t need a well-restored HEMI to make money on an old Charger. On eBay right now is an auction for a burned, crushed, and totaled ‘66 HEMI Charger. Bidding is already over $13,000, and there’s still a couple of days left on the clock.
According to the seller’s story, this 4-speed ‘66 HEMI Charger was driven from 1966 and into the early 1970s, when it was painted and stored, uninsured, in a barn. Then in 2010 a building fire torched the car from front to back, and falling debris did a number on the roof. A car that had been worth close to a quarter-million dollars before the recession had its value decimated…but not entirely wiped out.
See, there are some crazy Mopar enthusiasts out there who don’t see a burned and wrecked hulk of a car, but rather see their next project. If this is indeed a numbers-matching ‘66 HEMI, someone is going to end up paying big bucks for the opportunity to spend even more money returning this car to working order. And even then, it won’t be even close to “all original” anymore…but it will be a legit HEMI. To some people, that’s worth more money than rightly makes sense.
