Like most car enthusiasts, we spend many of our evenings and downtime scouring the eBay listings to find those hidden car auction gems. Well if you are a fan of 70’s and 80’s British punk bands you will love today’s eBay find of the day. Up for auction this week is a 1963 Ford Thunderbird which comes courtesy of Beverly Hills Car Club. The Thunderbird itself is a damn awesome ride, and according to Hagerty Insurance, is a classic that is still very affordable as they set an average value on the ’63 2-door coupe at $13,000. But what sets this T-bird apart is the fact that it was once owned by The Clash’s former band founder/lead singer Joe Strummer.
The Thunderbird was purchased by Strummer in 1987 for $4200 and is advertised that it sits in pristine condition. Given the massive dent in the right rear quarter and the tear on the driver’s side door panel, “pristine” can also be defined better as USED. But even still this is a great opportunity to not only own a classic Ford, but also a piece of rock and roll history.
“This is such a special car to me. I knew Joe Strummer as a boy growing up in London. He was one of a kind, just like this car,” said Alex Manos, owner of the Beverly Hills Car Club. “Joe had an enormous love for American cars and I feel its serendipitous that this beautiful 1963 Ford Thunderbird is coming to us for sale.”
According to the listing this Thunderbird wasn’t just any other car for Strummer, rather this was his daily driver in the late 80s:
In 1987 and 1988 Joe Strummer was living in Los Angeles, in a beautiful wood-framed house with a swimming-pool on Ridgemount Drive off Laurel Canyon where he recorded his first solo album, Earthquake Weather, at Baby O studio on Sunset Boulevard. During this time, Joes principal mode of transport was this racy blue 1963 Ford Thunderbird. He would take his partner Gaby and their two young daughters on family outings to the desert in the T-Bird. In May 1988 he and Gaby drove the 850 miles in the Ford Thunderbird to New Mexico for the Santa Fe film festival, where Mystery Train, Jim Jarmuschs masterly independent film in which Joe starred, was being screened.
You might want to act quickly though as since we’ve started watching this T-bird it has jumped from $2,100, thanks to 70 bids, to nearly $30,000. That’s $17,000 more than Hagerty values the average value of this Thunderbird at! But, the reserve has been met and on Thursday this Thunderbird will sell to a new owner!
