Car Feature: A Turbocharged, V6 Fox-Body Mustang

plan-b-4Believe it or not, it has been more than twenty years since the last Fox-body Mustang rolled off of a Ford assembly line. In those two decades, just about anything that can be done to a Fox-body, has been done. From GT500 mod motors to Chevy LS swaps, and just about everything in between, it is pretty hard to come up with a unique and cool take on these soon-to-be-classic Mustangs.

Brandon Elledge of Ocala, Florida, has found a way to make his Fox-body Mustang so much different from the rest of the crowd that we just had to share it here. A professional builder of Ford V6 engines, Elledge stuffed a 3.8 liter V6 engine into his Fox-body, and then added a single massive turbocharger to it, creating an incredibly unique and wonderful ride unlike any other.

The project began when Elledge, who owned a Thunderbird Supercoupe, decided he needed to swap his Supercoupe setup into a Mustang. The T-bird couldn’t legally run any faster at the track due to safety regulations, and the lack of support for the Thunderbird’s MN-12 chassis meant Elledge would have invest thousands of additional dollars into his car to make it track legal. Instead, he decided to try to sell the Thunderbird, but couldn’t get what he was asking for it.

The Mustang started life as a 4-banger, but soon received a turbocharged 3.8 liter V6 from Elledge's Thunderbird.

Eventually Elledge gave up on trying to sell the Thunderbird, and instead decided to strip the parts out and stuff them into a more popular platform…like the Mustang. So for $200, he picked up a 1993 four-cylinder, five-speed Mustang to make the swap, while selling the Thunderbird body for $1,200 and getting another $600 for his custom header setup. He was already $1,600 up at this point, and decided to name his Mustang with T-bird power, “Project Plan B.”

Making a V6 engine fit into a ‘93 Fox-body proved more difficult than anticipated. First Elledge tried using motor mounts from a 1986 Mustang (which did have a V6 engine option) but found that by using SN95 V6 motor mounts he could sit the motor about 2-inches back. “So obviously I used the SN95 V6 motor mounts to get as much weight transfer as possible,” says Elledge.

Speaking of the motor, let’s talk specs. Most of the work is custom, seeing as how there is precious little support for the older Ford V6 engines, but Elledge was still able to find some Eagle H-beam rods for his ride with custom JE pistons sitting at a comfortable 9.5:1 compression ratio.

The Supercoupe 3.8 engine also came with a forged crankshaft stock, certainly a useful addition to a build like this. A custom-ground turbo cam, SVO roller rockers, along with ported and polished split-port heads help make big power. Let’s not forget the Borg-Warner S380 80 mm turbocharger too.

The engine fits well-enough in the Fox-body chassis, though it required a fair bit of fabrication on Elledge's part.

Backed by a beefed-up 4R70W transmission with a 4,500 RPM stall, Elledge is aiming to hit mid-to-low 9’s in the quarter-mile. “When this combo was in the Thunderbird, it would trap 132-136 mph on 22psi,” he says. Mind you, this is with an engine that had only mild performance aspirations even new. What Elledge has accomplished here is something truly unique, though it wasn’t easy. There was a lot of custom fabrication to be performed, and while the project runs and drives, it isn’t quite ready for the track yet. As you can see from the video, it still looks a little rough, to say the least.

And yet at the end of the day, Brandon Elledge has managed to wow us with a most surprising and potent build. Sure, his Mustang isn’t quite finished yet, and many people don’t even remember the old Thunderbird Supercoupes. But who would have thought such an engine was capable of such big power, and that putting it in a Mustang of all things was a good idea? Obviously Elledge did, and we are in his debt for reminding us that there really is no end to the creativity when it comes to car guys.
