Often times when the seller of a classic car refers to a “low mileage” vehicle, they’re talking about numbers in the low five-figures. It wasn’t all that long ago that new car buyers didn’t expect their vehicles to make it to the 100,000 mile mark, after all, and with the ability to fill up on premium fuel for pocket change, why not drive as much as you can? Yet some people managed to resist the allure of driving cars that would go on to become true low-mileage, future classics.

We don’t know how one could resist driving a brand new 1969 Chevrolet Corvette L88 equipped with one of GM’s most powerful motors from the era, a 430 hp aluminum-head 427 ci V8. Yet whoever bought this street-legal Corvette drag car managed to put a mere 2,756 miles on it over the course of more than four decades, and that restraint will pay off big time when this low-mileage L88 crosses the block at the Pebble Beach Concours this weekend through Rick Cole Auctions.

Loaded with documentation that supports the owner’s assertion that this particular L88 is 90-percent original, initial estimates put the sale price at between $650,000 and $750,000. Why so much? Well for one, the L88 package itself contains not just a criminally-under rated horsepower factory under the hood, it also adds the four-speed Muncie “Rock Crusher” manual transmission, a stiffer suspension, “heavy duty” brakes, and posi-traction, while removing things like the radio, heater, and air conditioning.

It’s estimated that just 116 L88 Corvettes were built for the 1969 model year, and this is likely to be the lowest-mileage one left. With its lack of mileage being perhaps the most appealing factor, we doubt this Riverside Gold ‘Vette will be seen much outside of private collections and high-end car shows…at least until it inevitably goes to auction again.
