There are two schools of thought when it comes to collecting cars. One treats cars the same as one might treat a work of art, keeping them locked up, safe from prying eyes and the elements. Most of us malign this view of car collecting, unfairly we might add, for it is these kinds of collectors that ensure future generations will have real examples of famous vehicles to one day talk about.
That is because the other school of thought believes that no matter how much you pay for a car, it should be driven. And as much as we admire people who enjoy driving cars that cost more than the average home, they are putting themselves and their expensive rides at the risk of, well, this.
Jalopnik reports via news site WCYB that a one-car accident in Tennessee has left either an original, or very accurate replica, of a Ford GT40 pretty much totaled. And you can blame Mother Nature and rainy roads for this one.
According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the accident happened on I-26 in Uniconi County yesterday. As you might imagine, these cars get very little in the way of traction in the first place; mix in some light percipitation, and even a seasoned driver might lose control. The THP was quoted as saying the value of the car was in the range of $150,000. We’re not sure where they got that figure, though it is a lot less than what a real GT40 would go for around $400,000. However, well-done replicas can easily cost $150,000 or more, which as Jalopnik expostulates is more than likely the case.
At least we’re hoping that wasn’t a real GT40…
