The early 1980s were not a good time for American muscle cars. Horsepower even for big V8 models typically came in under 200 ponies, leaving it up to the automotive aftermarket to really deliver muscle car-worthy performance. In 1981 the second generation of Chevy Camaros was about to be replaced by the new 3rd-gen models, and one iconic tuner decided to send them out with a bang.
Don Yenko built just 19 of his Turbo Z Camaros, and up on eBay is the last one ever made. This freshly-restored, low-mileage Yenko has a high asking price, but some serious history as one of the last vehicles Yenko ever worked on and sold to the public.
In 1981 GM toned down the compression ratio of its V8 engines to accept lower octane fuels, while also adding emissions control units that killed horsepower. This meant the factory Camaros made a paltry 175 horsepower. Yenko stepped in and developed a turbo system with Turbo International that boosted horsepower and fuel economy without touching the emissions system.
Yet Yenko sold just 19 of these cars, and in 1982 he sold his family dealership. In 1987, Yenko died in a car accident, closing the book on a storied Chevy tuning career. But his legendary cars live on, and this particular example has had a total rotisserie restoration down to every nut and bolt.
The asking price is steep at $179,000, but consider again that this is one of the last Yenko Chevy’s ever sold. There will never be another Yenko. That’s some heavy stuff, which is why somebody out there will eventually pony up a pretty penny for this rare turbo Camaro.
