The big news from Ford this year is the 2015 Mustang, which for the first time will be offered as a globally-available vehicle, a part of the wider Ford network. But that doesn’t mean other countries have lacked for fast, fun Ford vehicles, with hot hatchbacks like the Ford Focus RS taking up the mantle of performance in the absence of the Mustang.
The Focus RS is eagerly anticipated, and likely to get the same 2.3 liter EcoBoost turbo as the 2015 Mustang. But another hot hatch that is flying under the radar is the Fiesta RS, which a new report from AutoExpress suggests could have up to 230 horsepower, an almost 25% boost over the current Fiesta ST.
The Fiesta ST has become quite the darling of the motoring press, offering a veritable performance value with a peppy 1.6 liter EcoBoost engine and dynamic steering and handling that makes it a fun car in the corners. But the next step up from the Fiesta ST is the RS model, which in addition to a more track-oriented suspension, will get some major upgrades to the 1.6 liter EcoBoost motor.
This unspecified improvements could boost horsepower from the 179 ponies its rated at in the U.K. to around 230 horsepower. In the U.S., less-strict emissions regulations allow the Fiesta ST to put down 197 horsepower, though it is unlikely Ford will import the RS model to America.
There would be too much overlap with the Focus ST, though the Focus RS model will probably be in the same horsepower ballpark as at least the four-cylinder Mustang. Who knows what strategy Ford is weighing in regards to its healthy performance lineup, but in the end Ford enthusiasts are the real winners here.
