The 2016 Chevy Camaro is slated to hit dealerships sometime this fall, and you’d expect GM to already have everything close to production specifications. Yet any automaker worth its logo knows that testing and tuning is never truly finished, and Germany’s Nurburgring remains one of the most popular testing grounds for sports cars from around the world.

Following a spy video that revealed a camouflaged sixth-generation Camaro comes this video of a 2016 Camaro SS, along with what is reported to be a 2015 Chevy Z28 testing on the ‘Ring. But like the Transformers movies that GM has become entangled with (for better or worse), is there more than meets the eye here?

While the camouflaged Camaro test mule from earlier was almost certainly either the next-gen ZL1 or Z28 (we’re leaning towards the latter), we’re a lot less sure what we’re looking at here. Is this really just a 2016 Camaro SS, perhaps trying to dial in some solid ‘Ring numbers for the sake of marketing? We think it’s more likely that this is a Camaro SS equipped with some kind of performance-enhancing option package, possibly a successor to the 1LE. There would be no outward identifiers to let us know this is the case, and it’d take a real racing expert to notice any sorts of handling differences from afar.

Then there’s the presence of a 2015 Camaro Z28 too. This could just be a privately-owned car that is coincidentally out on the track at the same time as GM test cars, or it could be there to serve as a baseline of sorts for the other drivers. This would give weight to our previous assertion that the camo-clad Camaro was a Z28, or even a 1LE, not a ZL1. We still think it makes more sense to test a track-focused Z28 model at the ‘Ring, rather than a supercharged straight-liner like the ZL1.

Are we overreaching with the speculation, or is GM hiding something obvious in plain sight?
