On Monday morning, Ken Block dropped his 5th Gymkhana video for the masses to enjoy. Though it has been live for just 3 full days, the video has garnered nearly 11.5 million views on YouTube, continuing Block’s triumphant conquest of all things viral video. Yet this was the first Gymkhana video shot in a city, and the always-busy San Francisco of all places. How did they accommodate the outlandish stunt driving of the world’s foremost Gymkhana racer?

A New York Times piece takes a behind-the-scenes look at the making of Gymkhana 5, including an interview with Block himself about what San Francisco did to entice the filming of the fifth Gymkhana film.

Apparently, San Francisco bent over backwards to accommodate Block and his crew, including temporarily shutting down the Oakland Bay Bridge. Block only got a couple of shots at making his entrance to San Fran count, leaving no room for error. Block also revealed that the ten-minute film took four days of shooting to bring together.

Block actually has a laundry list of cities he’d like to hoon his way through, including New York, Portland, and even Paris. But we have to agree that San Francisco provided the best driving roads for a video like this, and there were a few moments where Block even evoked the famous chase scene from Bullitt, also set in San Francisco.
