DeTomaso was once a well-known and well-respected name. Founded in 1959, the Italian sports car maker fought its way into a niche market dominated by the likes of Lamborghini and Ferrari. So why do we care? Well back then, De Tomaso was powered by Ford engines. While the Italian car maker went into bankruptcy back in 2004, there remains a cult of fans devoted to the quirky exotic builder.
Over at Yanko Design comes this rendering of a modern-day DeTomaso exotic, once again powered by a Ford engine. Though perhaps not the engine you might think.
Frederik Tjellsesen penned this fresh-looking car, which he deigned to call the “Ghepardo.” It is a four-door coupe, and reading down the list of technologies reads like an environmentalist’s wet dreams. Methanol power cells, a drag coefficient of just .25, and a super lightweight body. The rear gull-wing doors provide access to both the rear seats and the trunk, and many of the design cues hint at earlier DeTomaso models, like the Mangusta.
What really piqued our interest though was the engine. Power for this fantasy car would come from a tuned-up Ford EcoBoost V6.Turning up the turbocharged engine to over 465 horsepower would be a blast. We wonder though, would the designer try to cram it in for a mid-engine setup? Probably not with four seats. Still, it is a beautiful car to ogle, even if it never becomes a reality.
