Shop Dawg Visited Movie Premiere With Currie

Well it was a slow day in the shop today. BJ and I took a break from all the installs going on Project Swinger to catch up on some of our writing duties; so I thought I would take the time to share with you a neat event I went to a little while back.

It was cool Southern California night and stage was set for a movie premiere. No I wasn’t in Hollywood at the Kodiak Theater, please, I was somewhere way better. I had the chance to take a drive up the freeway to Currie Enterprises in Anaheim, CA. We were invited to watch the premiere of “King of the Hammers” as well as be part of an open house of the Currie facility. The crowd showed up to party with many of the stars of the movie including event winner Shannon Campbell as well as the Currie Family.

Before the event was the open house part of the night. This was a really neat to see how the different products that Currie produces are made from start to finish. While it was not a complete shop tour I was able to get the gist of how things worked.

What interested me was the different types of vehicles that Currie makes rearends for. While the main focus of the night was clearly off-road vehicles Currie still managed to sneak in a few jewels for the pavement guys out there. Me, I love all different kinds of car across the automotive spectrum. Chances are if it has a engine (or motor; depending on who you ask) and some way of getting it around I love it. It was neat to see all of the Off-road trucks and Jeeps that I normally don’t get to see everyday.

Of everything that I saw at the event a few cars stood out to me. First was this 1910 Selden Raceabout owned by Frank Currie. This isn’t a show car boys and girls, this is the real deal. This car not only runs but it also drives. Frank Currie and his grandson raced this car in the 25th annual Great American Race, winning the most stages of all the competitors.

As the sun set behind the Orange County hills the crowd moved inside for the screening of the movie. The King of the Hammers is a rock crawling / desert race that takes place in Johnson Valley California. Not knowing a lot about the race I was interested to see the movie and it turned out. Boy it didn’t disappoint. The movie captured the emotion and pride of the event. Thumbs up to crew that put that movie together.

At the end of the night I was sad to go. I could have stayed there all night and talked with the different racers, workers, and members of the Currie Family. Thanks to Currie for inviting us out for this event it was a blast.
