Tanks Inc. Helps You Convert Your Classic Mopar To EFI

The market for Malaise-era classic cars and American muscle has been growing lately for obvious reasons. These cars were produced in plentiful numbers, their market value is easier to swallow compared to their 1960s more popular big brothers, and they still have that cool factor you want in a classic. The aftermarket has also seen this increase in popularity and has been supplying performance and restoration parts to help owners keep these cars on the road and performing better than ever. When it comes to fueling, Tanks Inc. helps you convert your classic Mopar to EFI.

Tanks started in 1980 making custom gas tanks for local hot rodders in Iowa, but the owner built his first gas tank in the mid-60s for his personal 1927 Ford T-Bucket. Since then, this family-owned business has grown to meet the needs of the industry and its customers, and in recent years, it has become a household name for high-quality gas tanks and fuel system parts that can supply modern fuel injection systems.

Tanks Inc. Mopar EFI

To the unassuming car-show attendee, this tank looks like the factory tank that came on a Charger, Road Runner, Coronet, or Satellite.

Tanks Inc. introduces to their lineup a new gas tank for the mid-size B-body that is a welcome solution to owners who want to convert their early 70s classic to electronic fuel injection. It fits 1971 to 1973 Dodge Chargers, Dodge Coronets, Plymouth Road Runners, and Plymouth Satellites, and its galvanized steel construction is stamped to look just like the stock unit to the naked eye. It is then powder-coated silver for years and years of durable service and rust prevention. Fuel pump and sender mounting locations are recessed in the top of the tank for easy installation with no modification needed to the trunk pan of your car, so it looks factory from the outside and when you open the trunk.

Tanks Inc. stamped the galvanized steel body just like the original.

The tank’s capacity is still 20 gallons, just like the original, and it uses its GPA series fuel pump assemblies, which utilize Walbro high-performance pumps. You can order yours in sizes from 109 to 450 liters per hour, so you can feed carbureted or low-pressure EFI systems up to 1,000 horsepower high-pressure EFI systems. The fuel-sending unit is the common aftermarket 5-bolt style and can be supplied by Tanks Inc. in multiple OHM ranges, or you can choose to leave it out if you wish to supply your own sender.

The fuel sender and pump assembly are mounted in a recess on top of the tank (left). A closer look at the internal baffling for the fuel pump. Note the balance tubes (right).

But this is no ordinary reproduction tank with an internal fuel pump installed. Tanks Inc. has been designing electronic fuel-injection gas tanks for classic cars and trucks for years, understands the high flow and pressure they demand, and builds its gas tanks to fit those needs. Each tank has a built-in internal baffle and an extra-large 4.8-liter dual-tube baffled fuel tray to prevent fuel pump starvation. Unlike a carbureted engine, EFI doesn’t like even momentary fuel pump starvation, so this specially designed baffle is perfect at home in your street car and for your pro-touring, autocross, or road racing ride.

The owner of this ’72 Charger swapped the original small-block for a 6.1 liter fuel-injected Gen III Hemi.

Now, that dream of finding an early 70s B-body for sale on Marketplace for a good deal can become a reality! Maybe you can install a Holley Sniper unit on the original LA small-block or 383, or perhaps you can take it a step further and swap in a modern Gen III Hemi power plant. Regardless of how you choose to build yours, there is a good chance the old tank needs replacing, so let Tanks Inc. help you convert your classic Mopar to EFI.
