As the world looks to cram into smaller and smaller cars, we find ourselves ever more nostalgic for the days when even compact cars were pretty freakin’ huge. The 1969-70 Mustang is a perfect example, gaining several inches and several hundred pounds over the original model. But that didn’t mean they couldn’t haul ass and sound amazing while doing it.

Behold this video of the RT Restorations’ 1970 Mustang GTO racer, found by Bangshift on YouTube. It’s basically almost three minutes of screaming Ford thunder at Road Atlanta last summer, and it sure is a sweet song that engine is singing.

This ’70 Mustang is actually one of five Mustangs in the RT Restorations racing fleet, which includes another 1970 Mustang, a classic ’65, a 1984 Mustang that ran in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and an All Trans Am ‘Stang. But this black beauty strikes us as the cream de la crème, as we find ourselves captivated with that roaring small-block Boss 302.

The driver, Adam Rupp, is lucky to live in a time where he can benefit from all of the modern advancements in safety equipment, and still get to race and enjoy these classic Mustangs the way they were raced back in 1970. As an aftereffect, we also get a chance to enjoy watching these guys trash their vintage racers in a way that must make many car collectors cringe. Every form of motorsports has its own unique sound, but watching old Mustangs like this really sends a shiver of American pride up our spine.
