Dyno tuning serves a very important part in the automotive aftermarket industry. Not only does a dynamometer allow you to see how much horsepower and torque your vehicle makes, but it monitors everything from engine speed to air/fuel ratio, allowing skilled technicians to optimize your car’s tune. And thanks to modern video equipment, and mankind’s perverse obsession with destruction, YouTube is now full of videos of dyno runs going badly.

We found this YouTube video of a laced-together “Top 30” dyno fails into a brief six-minute video. There’s lots of destruction and “dumbassery” going on in this video, though it looks to us like the import guys got the worst of it. Gee, we wonder why…

Why does a dyno run go wrong? It can be hard to say. The opening video of a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution flying off the dyno appears to be from a lack of straps on the front of the car. Rookie mistake. But other video clips are not the fault of the dyno operators, but rather the car itself falling apart or blowing up, like the combustible Shelby Mustang at around 90 seconds into the video.

The import boys no doubt have their work cut out for them, operating often with front-wheel or all-wheel drive vehicles, obviously inferior to the popular rear-wheel drive setup of American muscle cars. But the domestics are not immune to accident or “asshattery,” as the smokey Corvette around the 3-minute mark shows.
