Quick! Someone cue the Ricky Bobby comments: “Help me Oprah Winfrey, I’m on fire!” Said Clint Bowyer who was acting as an announcer at Saturday night’s Sprint Unlimited.
Given the amount of crashes that happened Saturday night you would think that this comment would have been for a fire during one of the races many crashes. However, it actually occurred when the 2014 Chevy SS pace car suddenly caught fire and had to dramatically pull off the track to the attention of the fire crews at the speedway.
They say any publicity is good publicity, but we are wondering if Chevrolet believes that to be true. For Chevrolet and GM it closed out a terrible week of news for the manufacturer. On top of the 2014 pace car trying to burn to the ground, last week GM recalled 2005-2007 Cobalts and 2007 G5’s for a faulty ignition switch, and had the now famous sinkhole develop under the Corvette Museum where they lost 8 historic Vettes.
Chevrolet did release a statement about what exactly happened with the 2014 SS: “The pace car experienced a fire in the trunk area, which contains a purpose-built auxiliary electrical kit to operate the numerous caution lights during the race,” the statement read. “The pace car driver and passenger safely exited the vehicle. An assessment is underway.”
At least Kyle Busch found it a little amusing: ”I saw the aftermath where two guys were getting out of it. Seemed like they were running for their life, scared of a little fire,” Kyle Busch said after the event. ”Maybe they need firesuits now.”
