Here in America, we have access to an amazing interstate system with some not-so-amazing speed limits. Why lawmakers decided that 75 mph should be the max speed, even in unpopulated areas that make up much of America’s midwest, is beyond us. Today’s cars are much safer and can easily handle higher speeds, which is why we think we should take a page from Germany and open an Autobahn of our own.

After all, what is the point of owning a 200 mph car like the 2014 Shelby GT500 if you can’t top it out? The crew of Autoblog.nl, a car-blogging outfit based in the Netherlands, had a chance to take the 662 horsepower Shelby out on the Autobahn, and in less than a minute found themselves going 190 mph on public roads.

Now only a very few portions of the Autobahn don’t actually have a speed limit, and construction often limits the top speed of drivers. You also have to realize that German drivers are, as a whole, better-trained than most American drivers, and anyone in the left lane is trained to move over for a faster car. That is what makes the Autobahn work; communal cooperation in the spirit of driving fast.

Which is great for German drivers, especially those select few that can afford to import a car like the 2014 Shelby GT500. In the span of a minute the Shelby goes from standing still to 190 mph, and it is a truly glorious thing to witness. This is what cars like the 5.8 liter Trinity equipped uber-Stang were built to do, and we long for the day when lawmakers come to their senses and implement higher speed limits on America’s more rural highways.
